WTFN Aurora has been broadcasting since december 13, 1938
This radio station signed on as WMRO December 13, 1938 with 500 watts of daytime power on AM 1250. The call letters “WMRO” were chosen because the then owner’s initials were MRO. Martin O’Brien later moved the frequency to AM 1280 in 1941 thanks to the North American Regional Broadcasting Agreement.
WMRO AM 1280 offered a local format which later became a “full service” format in the late 1940’s.
Chicago Television star John Drury was part of the on-air broadcasting staff at WMRO. In 1957 the station was sold, and 3 years later AM 1280 was granted night authorization and began broadcasting 24/7.
In 2026, AM 1280’s call letters were changed to WTFN.
It’s 2026 and we are tasked with moving WTFN’s AM towers, moving WTFN’s fm antenna, and finding new stations to save this great community staple – AM 1280 WTFN. We’re hoping the community will help us work on the next 88 years on-air.
